Seduction In Seville
The Men of FTI Book Two
A sneak peak...
He slowly became aware of the continuous beeping. He focused in on the noise; it kept him in the present. It kept him from drifting away from darkness, from nightmares. The beeping helped him pass the time. Thousands of beeps passed.
He began to hear other noises—footsteps, sniffling, crying, someone reading to him. The voice was beautiful, and there was no other sound in his dark world. It became his anchor. The voice replaced the beeps. He passed time now in the intervals of that soft, musical voice, telling him stories of places he had never been. Sometimes the voice spoke in a different language, the words rolling off of the person’s tongue like water, fluid and harmonious. At times he felt a hand, softly stroking his, drawing designs in the palm of his hand. A touch at his forehead. Sometimes he would hear nothing for what seemed like days, but perhaps it was really just minutes, even seconds. He would feel the air shift, and that same floral scent would fill his nose, and he knew the person was there. Sometimes he heard only the steady breathing as the person slept. Once he felt the person’s nails brush his hand, and he knew it was a woman. The scent alone should have told him that; the voice alone should have told him that. But his mind was not piecing the information together as it should. He was so tired, always tired. But always, he became aware she was there. He urged his body to obey him and open his eyes, but he never could. The frustration was palpable.
More time passed. And she was always there. At times he thought he had died, but then the pain would seep in, and he knew he was not in heaven. Perhaps hell, then. But hell would not have an angelic voice there to soothe him. His chest felt heavy and burned, and his lungs ached each time he inhaled. No, he wasn’t in heaven.
But then, one day, he became aware again. She was in the room. He knew she was not sitting with him, but she was there. He felt pressure behind his eyes; it had been so long since he had felt he had command of them. Slowly, so slowly, he opened them. The light sent shards of glass tearing through his head. So much that he had to slam them shut just as soon as he had opened them. He heard a quick intake of breath, a gasp. He tried again, more slowly this time. His vision was clearer. He blinked rapidly, his brain trying to process all of the lights and images projected to it. But he saw none of it. He was aware of only one thing. Her. Patrick blinked once more and found himself staring across the room into those familiar immense, doe-like brown eyes. He would know her anywhere.
