— SYNOPSIS --
No amount of counseling can bring Josh Harris back to his old self.
After a tragedy that changed his life forever, eighteen-year-old Josh has lived in a year-long fog of medication and confusion. It’s all he can do to not think about his dad—a culinary genius who raised him in the kitchen. Thankfully, Josh inherited his golden palate and sixth sense for cooking, which is the only thing that makes sense anymore.
For a seventeen-year-old girl, life can’t get much worse…
Bernie Abeyta is a senior in high school and lives with her drug-addicted mother, but has managed to keep her grades up so she can get into college. With her father in prison and her mom’s sleazy boyfriend getting too close for comfort, Bernie turns to her best friend Gabby Rodriguez for help, but discovers Gabby has gone missing. Distressed over her friend’s sudden disappearance, Bernie resorts to living out of her car while she looks for answers and tries to avoid foster care.
Part love, part mystery, part cookbook—and all heart.
During economics class, Josh finds himself captivated by his new project partner, Bernie. As they grow closer, he insists Bernie move in with him and his mother. Furthermore, he offers to help look for Gabby.
Bernie refuses to believe Gabby ran away, and she’s determined to get to the bottom of the mystery—no matter how great the danger to herself.
Will Bernie’s gritty life be too much for Josh to handle? Or will he fight for The Way to Her Heart?

Josh
She cut her hair. Josh realized he was staring at the girl in the next row and pulled his gaze back to his notebook as the teacher droned on about supply and demand curves. I don’t care for short hair on girls. Yet he couldn’t keep his eyes off her. He didn’t even know her name. On Friday her hair had been long, the silky black tresses reaching below her shoulder blades. Today, he could see the back of her neck. He could see how long and slender it was and watched as she reached around to feel it, seeming surprised, perhaps still unused to the short cut. She pushed the long front layer behind her ear. The purple streak is kind of cute, though. He once again forced his gaze back to his notes, reminding himself that he had a girlfriend; a beautiful girlfriend with long blonde hair. Focus, Harris. Get your mind off the pretty girl with the short hair. She was pretty. He’d always thought so, even though he didn’t know her name. He’d heard it; wasn’t it something weird? Enough! Supply, demand. That’s all you need to think about.
“So, for the next few weeks you will be paired up with one of your classmates as we launch a new project designed to help you experience some of what it takes to create and stick to a household budget.” Mr. Griego picked up a stack of index cards from his desk. “I have created a scenario with careers and incomes for each couple. Some of you have children, and some don’t. Every few days you will get a new financial situation you have to deal with. Each week of this project will be the equivalent of one month for your budget. You will turn in a complete six month budget, along with a written report at the end of the project. Each couple will also give a five-minute oral presentation.” He started calling names and handing out index cards. There were groans and titters of laughter as the names were called because some of the couples were same-sex. “Josh Harris and Bernie Abeyta.” No one in the class said anything or laughed at the pairing. Josh wasn’t surprised; he had pretty much fallen off the radar over a year ago. He stood and walked to the front of the room to retrieve the index card. “Who’s Bernie Abeyta?” he asked quietly. Great. I’m paired with a guy. Just what I needed. The girl with the short, purple hair raised her hand. “Me.” She sounded bored. “Okay. I’m, uh, I’m Josh.” He stood in front of her desk, awkwardly shifting from side to side. “Yeah. I’m Bernie.” She glanced up quickly, meeting his gaze, then looked away. “You have the last fifteen minutes of class to exchange contact information, phone numbers, email addresses, whatever you need to get in touch with your partner. Most of the project work will need to be on your own time as you will need to visit grocery stores and do some online research,” Mr. Griego said. Josh sat down in the newly vacated desk in front of Bernie. “So.” He waved the index card. “One of us is a teacher and the other is an attorney. Which do you want to be?” Bernie shrugged. “It doesn’t really matter to me. You choose.” He looked at her, a half-smile on his face. Close-up he noticed that she had beautiful, smooth, light-brown skin and her eyes were so dark they looked black. She didn’t wear much makeup; she didn’t need to. “Fine. I’ll be the teacher. You can be the attorney.” She looked up quickly. “Is that okay?” She shrugged again. “Sure. It doesn’t matter. Do we have kids?” “Yeah, we have two: an eight-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son. So, I guess we should exchange phone numbers and email.” He scrawled his information on a page of his notebook and tore it out, handing it to her. She took the page, staring at it blankly for a moment before tearing a piece of paper out of her own notebook. “Here’s my email.” He looked at it. “What’s your cell number?”
“I don’t have one. Just the email.”
“Oh. Okay.” Josh had never heard of anyone his age who didn’t have a cell phone. “So, do you want to get together tonight to get started on this? We could meet at my house. Or yours. Whatever you want.” “Yours. Here.” She pushed the paper back at him. “Write your address. I have to work until seven. I can be there around seven-thirty. Is that okay?” She didn’t meet his eyes. “Uh, sure. That’s fine. Here.” He handed the paper back. “Do you need a ride or anything?” “No.” “Oh. Great. So, I’ll, uh, see you tonight. I guess.” He had never been so tongue-tied around a girl. “Yeah.” She turned her attention back to her notebook, clearly dismissing him. Josh returned to his seat, chagrined. I seem to have lost my touch. Then again, he hadn’t really been trying very hard for a long time. He used to be much better at this whole thing: friends, girls, talking. Now he simply didn’t have the energy anymore. It was October of his senior year and he was biding his time until he could graduate and move on with his life. She’s really pretty, though. He groaned inwardly as he packed his notebook and shouldered his backpack. He knew he had no business noticing how pretty his new partner was; he should be thinking about how gorgeous his girlfriend had looked in her cheerleading uniform that morning during the pep rally. She was beautiful, sweet, and had stuck by him through a seriously dark time in his life. He had really been phoning it in lately with Kayleigh. Jeez, he could do better. He merged with the flow of humanity in the hallway, determined to do right by her, starting tomorrow at lunch.

Welcome to the Musings of Many!
What is the hardest thing about writing? I went to my high school reunion over the summer and it brought back a lot of repressed memories that went into this book…so basically I probably can’t go to the next reunion unless I want to risk getting hit in the face. Some of the things I wrote about: breakups, betrayal, losing a friend, watching a loved one suffer, all bring up feelings that most people want to avoid, so that’s never easy to relive for the sake of a story. It has to be done for the story to feel authentic though. How much research is involved when writing your books? I visited Grand Haven, Michigan several times before and after I began the Star Series. A lot of the mean girl/relationship drama is from things I’ve gone through either as a teen or as an adult. I didn’t have to do much research when it came to Nick’s grandfather having Lewy Body dementia and Parkinson’s because I had a relative going through it. I’ve been both Pilar in what she dealt with with her grandmother, and Nick with his relative, and I know what that world feels like all too well. Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block? I watch movie and TV shows to try and kick start my brain into storytelling mode. Do you let the book stew – leave it for a month and then come back to it to edit? What’s your views on social media for marketing? I enjoy it because I love being able to connect with readers. There’s nothing like getting feedback from someone who was touched by something you wrote, which is something authors wouldn’t be able to experience without social media. Character Interview with Hadley Daniels from Competing with the Star How do your relationships impact you? Nick is my first real boyfriend and it’s really weird having his ex-girlfriend, Reagan, go on group dates with us. She always manages to say something to remind Nick of when they were together—so uncomfortable! She always makes me feel like an awkward little kid when I’m around her. Plus, finding out Nick used to be in love with my friend Simone and now she likes him—how do you compete with a TV star? What is your biggest fear? My best friend from my last school moved away and barely texts me, so now that I’ve moved, too, and made all new friends, well, I still worry about getting left behind. I felt so lonely after my best friend moved and then with the drama with Nick and Simone—my biggest fear is being alone and rejected. What is the one word you would use to define yourself? I’m definitely optimistic. I try to see the best in people and hope for the best whether it be with fitting in with a new group of friends or my relationship with Nick. I want to believe Nick wouldn’t kiss Simone and I also wants to believe Simone wouldn’t betray our friendship, but I know one of them has to be lying. What ‘group’ were you in during their high school years? I moved to Grand Haven hoping to make a fresh start and reinvent myself from the book loving introvert I am to someone who can fit in with the former TV star, Simone Hendrickson’s popular crowd. I did manage to get in with that group, but without losing my identity thanks to my best friend Charlotte who doesn’t get caught up in worrying about what other people think. I wish I could be more like Charlotte in that way. What annoys you? Fake people annoy and dealing with mean girls. Nick’s ex, Reagan, make me feel awful on a group date when she kept dropping passive aggressive comments about her and Nick’s relationship in front of everyone. Can you imagine your boyfriend’s relationship history being broadcast in front of a group while you just sit there and pretend it doesn’t bother you? What are your short term goals? To meet my favorite singer, Jack Brogger. He has a summer home in Grand Haven and Asia and I ran into him once. He’s going to be casting for a new music video that’s set in town, so I hope to meet him and maybe I’ll be an extra in his video in another book. *cough* hint, hint, Krysten. (Author’s note: I hear ya, working on it in book three now.)

Two days passed and Nick hadn’t called again. I couldn’t blame him. After all, I had pushed for him to be honest and then had bailed on him. I’m sure he was mad at me for telling him he could tell me the truth and then I punished him for it—and he would be right. I couldn’t handle the icky feelings, and instead of being a big girl and dealing with them, I came home from school and retreated into the world of books. A world where people were kidnapped, jewels were stolen, but nobody’s heart ever got broken because in my favorite series, The Raven Chronicles, Raven’s boyfriend, Fernando, was ever faithful and loyal and would never even look at another girl. He was the perfect book boyfriend. In other words, he was fictional and didn’t exist.I saw I had a text from Simone. Oh great, maybe she was asking for my blessing to go out with Nick, or if I was still planning to go to Watson High School next year so she could make out with him in a different hallway from my locker. Simone: Are you mad at me? Nick said you’re upset because you found out he used to like me. Oh fabulous. He told her the whole gross story. Well, of course he did, seeing as how he was always over with her clique and he could tell the love of his life anything.

He was struggling internally, she could feel it. She knew why, and so did he.
“I’ve been on my own for a long time now.” He tensed, his fingers flexing on her hips. Whoops, wrong thing to say. “I know that, Madison.” She opened her mouth to speak. “You’re not anymore.” She opened her mouth again. “Not ever again,” he added. He turned her then and looked down at her with determination in his eyes. Daring her to negate his statement. “Patrick—” “I found you again. Or you found me. Whichever. But never again, Madison.” She was silent for a beat, and then she felt her heart begin to thunder. Oh God, she was going to hyperventilate. She shook her head and then asked the question that had been on her mind for a month. “What are you doing?” It came out a bit like an accusation. She looked up at him and watched him grind his jaw, his hands on her hips using the same rhythm. “What am I doing?” “Yes.” “What I should have done eight years ago.” She glanced over his shoulder, thinking back to those eight years. She had woken up to her parents, and as much as she’d hated it, she’d wanted him there, too “What do you mean?” He looked at her for more than a few seconds, his gaze searching hers, and then he just seemed to look into her. “I knew your eyes the second I opened mine,” he said as if it were some sort of explanation. Goosebumps erupted all over her arms. “I could never forget them. Ever.” Still, she said nothing. “I saw them all the time. Every day for eight years.” She looked down. Their waists were almost touching. He had done that before. Careful not to connect them there. She leaned her lower half into him. Another first. And then he pulled her closer. She looked back up. “I should have never walked out of that hospital, Madison.” He sounded so sure. “Patrick...” She shook her head. “It’s okay that you did.” “No. It’s not.” He said it with finality. “I knew it was wrong then. I just ignored what I knew or maybe thought that I couldn’t be right. That I was misidentifying the feeling. That it was inappropriate for me to have those feelings then.” What was he talking about? “What feelings?” she asked. But he ignored her and kept going. “You were so scared. I didn’t know you, and I wanted to take it all away. All the time you spent there. Clear it from your mind.” His gaze was now over her shoulder, staring out the window. “And you needed me. You leaned on me, slept on me. Held my hand when we got to the hospital. I should have never left. At first, I told myself it was the right thing to do. You didn’t know me. You didn’t need me. I convinced myself that I was making it up. That what I was feeling was to make me feel better. I couldn’t save them all. I saved you. So, I told myself that this was all just me trying to take away my guilt...and that you really didn’t need me. But then, after time had passed and I saw your face more clearly...the way you had looked up at me in that basement. The way you looked at me in the Jeep. In the hospital. I knew leaving was a mistake. You did need me.” Madison was silent through it all. His explanation, though disjointed, was perfectly clear. She continued to look up at him. She had no clue what to say, so she didn’t say anything. “And then I realized it wasn’t just about what you needed. It was about what I needed. I needed you and to be there for you. To see you through it. And I could’ve found you, but...I didn’t. I stayed away.” “Why?” she whispered. He looked down at her then. “Because I knew Madison. I knew.” As if this were an entirely understandable explanation. “You knew what, Patrick? He stared at her, unblinking, and then said, “That you were mine.” Liquid Silver Books | Amazon | KOBO | iBooks | Barnes and Noble -Then after it- the code from the blog tour. “You happy with yourself?” Robert stood, meeting his glare. “What on earth are you talking about?” He growled. “You scared the fuck out of Liz by not coming home and sending that cowardly text. Why? Because you’re pissed about my past? I gave you those files thinking you could see the bigger fucking picture. Now you want to accuse me of what? Treason against the Council? Draecyn’s the bastard who sent me on the goddamned case to begin with.” Robert drew in a slow breath, trying to gather his words. He’d never seen Tremaine this angry before. Generally, he was levelheaded through the worst of times. “Nothing?” Tremaine spat. When Robert didn’t answer, he snarled, “Really think I could do all that?” Robert stepped around the desk, anger flickering to life. “You tell me, Tremaine. What am I supposed to think? You handed me stacks of files without warning me what was in there. Of course, I’m going to question every single thing.” Tremaine shook his head in slow motion, his brown eyes fading to gold, flashing with light. “You question what side I was on, then fucking question me like a man. Don’t hide away from Liz. You didn’t see the look on her face when she asked me if you got tired of her and wanted to give up.” “I’ll never give up on her.” An array of emotions splintered through Robert as he took a step closer, narrowing his eyes. “Yes, I made one bad decision. I gave her what I thought she wanted nearly twenty-two years ago. Never again.” “Then why didn’t you come home?” Tremaine demanded. He growled in frustration. “I was so twisted up trying to make sense of everything I read and couldn’t come home to see you wrapped around her, which I knew you had to be.” “Do you think I wanted to go so deep into HARP? Think I wanted to do all that shit? Tell me something, Robert, why do you think Draecyn sent me? No one else could get into HARP’s ranks. Draecyn knew I was the only one with any kind of chance of getting intel because he was the only one who knew who my real father was.” Robert’s heart sank. And they were right back to what he had finally realized a second before Tremaine barged in. “Because you’re half druid?” Tremaine’s hands trembled a moment before they fisted. He stepped closer until he was an inch from Robert’s face. “Exactly. I didn’t choose the assignment. It was chosen for me. And yeah, they expelled me… technically, but I kept Draecyn in the loop. Did you skip his files?” “You could have warned me what was really in there.” “So you could question if I was just saying that to keep you in our bed? No. Thank. You. I gave you every last shred of the files so you could see what happened and draw your own conclusions. Apparently, that was the wrong fucking move.” Robert’s jaw clenched. “Last night, after reading the final files, my head was swimming with a million details I didn’t understand. This morning they clicked into place, forming the bigger picture. I needed time to process.” “Next time, man up and call me. Tell me to fucking leave so you can go to Liz and not break her to pieces when she starts wondering if you really love her.” “Of course, I love her. I’ve always loved her. I didn’t want to fight in front of her when I was so lost in the details I couldn’t see the truth. Now back off.” Tremaine inched closer, his eyes lasered on Robert’s. “You want to lose Liz?” Robert shook his head. “Me? I’d understand that. Is it too much now? If so, it’s too damned late to get rid of me. I’ve always loved Liz, and I love you, but right now you disgust me. I’ve never done a damned thing to make you doubt me like this.” Robert attempted to shove him away, but Tremaine didn’t move. Frustrated, he hissed, “Had you waited ten more minutes, I would have been past the doubt. I needed time, Trem.” He reached for his phone to call Liz. Tremaine caught it and threw it across the room. “Fuck that. Stop and talk to me! Tell me what I have to do to convince you I’m not part of HARP?” “I know you’re not. There’s still a million questions on the tip of my tongue, but I get it.” “Promise you won’t do that to Liz again,” Tremaine insisted. “I swear it, and I’m sorry.” He met Tremaine’s golden stare. “Do you hate me now?” “You know better. I love you. You’re a piece of my soul. I can’t have you thinking I’m that scum.” He closed the distance, looking into Robert’s eyes with deep intensity. Desire washed through Robert. He gripped the back of Tremaine’s neck and pulled him in for a bruising kiss. Then he hissed into Tremaine’s ear. “I love you too.” “Prove it,” Tremaine growled, reaching behind Robert to shove everything off the desk. Files fell to the floor, books, journals, everything, even the phone. Their mouths collided, tongue’s dueling, teeth gnashing. Robert stood, and Tremaine pushed his jacket off, then gripped Robert’s shirt, ripping it open. Buttons flew across the room.
